Performing Power Estimation with the Quartus II and ModelSim Software

If you want to use the Model Technology ModelSim® software to perform a simulation that includes power estimation data, you can specify that the Quartus® II software should include power estimation data in the Verilog Output File (.vo) or VHDL Output File (.vho) generated for APEX 20KE, APEX 20KC, and Mercury devices. When you simulate the design in the ModelSim software, the ModelSim software uses the power estimation data to generate a Power Input File (.pwf) that you can use in the Quartus II software for estimating the power consumption of the design.

To perform power estimation using the Quartus II software and the ModelSim software:

  1. Specify EDA tool settings in the Quartus II software.

  2. NOTE Make sure you specify the ModelSim software in the Simulation tool list, and that you have turned on Generate Power Input File in the Verilog HDL/VHDL Output Settings dialog box.

  3. Compile the design with the Quartus II software. More Details

  4. Perform a timing simulation in the ModelSim-Altera® (OEM) software or perform a timing simulation in the ModelSim PE or SE (non-OEM) software. The ModelSim software generates the PWF File and place it in the \<project directory>\simulation\modelsim directory.

  5. Perform a functional simulation or perform a timing simulation of the design in the Quartus II software.

  6. NOTE Make sure you specify the ModelSim-generated PWF File in the Source of vector stimuli box in the Time/Vectors page of the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu).

  7. View the power consumption estimate in the Summary Section of the Simulation Report.
