EPXA4 Devices



The EPXA4, a member of the ARM®-based Excalibur device family, provides 17,128 registers; 212,992 memory bits; and 400,000 typical gates. It is based on a system-on-a-programmable-chip (SOPC) architecture, consisting of an embedded processor stripe and an APEX 20KE programmable logic device. The embedded processor stripe contains an industry-standard ARM®922T 32-bit RISC processor core operating at up to 166 MHz, peripherals (an UART, a general-purpose timer, a watchdog timer, and an interrupt controller), and a memory subsystem. The EPXA4 device provides two embedded memory controllers—one for external DRAM and a second for external flash memory or SRAM—that can be accessed by any of the bus masters. In addition, the EPXA4 device meets the low-voltage requirements of 1.8-V applications and supports multiple I/O standards.

The EPXA4 is available in 672-pin FineLine BGA® packages with 426 I/O pins and 1020-pin FineLine BGA packages with 488 I/O pins (see Note (11)). The device has 16,640 logic elements grouped into 104 MegaLAB structures, each of which consists of 16 LABs and one Embedded System Block (ESB). These MegaLAB structures are arranged into 26 rows and four columns. The embedded array consists of a series of ESBs, each of which provides 2,048 programmable bits that can be configured as product-term logic, LUT-based logic, or various types of memory, including content-addressable memory (CAM), dual-port RAM, ROM, or FIFO buffers. The EPXA4 device JTAG Instruction Register length is 10; the ARM-based Excalibur embedded processer core JTAG Instruction Register length is 4; the Boundary-Scan Register length is 1506; and the JTAG ID code is 084020DD.

Each I/O element contains a bidirectional I/O buffer and one register that can be used as either an input or output register. When used as inputs, the I/O registers provide quick setup times; as outputs, the I/O registers provide fast clock-to-output times. The EPXA4 device also contains four dedicated clock pins and four dedicated fast I/O pins for synchronous control signals with large fan-outs. In addition, the EPXA4 device includes ClockLock®, ClockBoost®, and ClockShift phase-locked loop (PLL) circuitry.
