Messages appear in the Messages window during compilation, simulation, a software build, or when you need to be alerted of other errors, information, or warnings generated by internal Quartus® II processes. Messages appear on one of two tabs: the Processing tab and the System tab. Message severity level is indicated by the icon preceding a message. For example, a red circle with an X indicates an error message. If you do not want to view warning and information messages, you can turn off the display of these messages in the Processing Options tab (Options command).
The Processing tab displays messages from your most recent compilation, simulation, or Software build; timing analysis messages appear as part of the compilation messages.
The System tab displays messages from all tasks unrelated to the Compiler, Simulator, or Software Builder including messages generated by the Programmer and other internal processes. Messages on the System tab often appear when you first open a project. Messages remain on the System tab until you clear them or close the project. New messages appear directly beneath the old messages on the System tab.
Altera® recommends that you leave the dockable Messages window open. The Messages window provides you with the only access to messages on the System tab. |
You can view messages using the Report window, Text-Format and HTML format versions of the Compiler or Simulator Report, and the Messages window. Messages are displayed in a list format and some messages will have related sub-messages beneath the top-level message. Messages that appear on the Processing tab in the Messages window also appear in the Messages section of the Report window for the compilation or simulation focus and in Text-Format Report Files (.rpt) and HTML-Format Report Files (.htm) that are generated for the compiler or simulator focus. Using the Report window, you can, at any time, view the messages from a previous compilation or simulation. You can also view messages from a previous compilation or simulation by opening an RPT file or an HTM file in the Quartus II software, or any text editor or HTML browser. The Current Message box indicates the number of the message currently selected in the Messages window or the Report window, and the total number of messages. The box only displays information; you cannot jump to specific messages from it.
You can get location information on a message in the Messages window or the Messages section of the Report window by using the Messages & Web Browser toolbar and the Message Locations window. If the source of a selected message can be traced back to a specific point in the code or design, the Next Location and Previous Location buttons, and the Current Location box become active. When you locate to the source of a message, the appropriate design source editor opens with the line of code or information highlighted that indicates the possible source of the message. The Current Location box indicates the number of the currently active location and the total number of available locations. The box only displays information; you cannot jump to specific location from it. If you open the Message Locations window and the source of a selected message can be traced back to a specific point in the code or design, the name of the source file and, if applicable, the position of the source of the message in the code or design, appear in the window.
The Messages & Web Browser toolbar is shared by the Messages section of the Report window and the Messages window. If you have only one of the two windows open, the display of the Messages & Web Browser toolbar display reflects the information in the window that is open. If, however, you have both windows open, by default the Messages & Web Browser toolbar display reflects the information in the Messages window. To display Report window information in the Messages & Web Browser toolbar, you must select the Report window.
