Overview: Working with Quartus II Projects

A Quartus® II project includes all of the design files, software source files, and other related files, necessary for the successful operation of a design. You can create a new project with the New Project wizard.

Once you create a project you can modify project settings with the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu). You can specify the names of additional object files and Library Files (.lib, .a) from outside the project, to include in the software build. You can also specify the output file formats. When you are ready to test an application you are building, you can build it with the Software Builder. The text editor supports C/C++ syntax coloring, and the Messages Window displays any errors or informational messages.

Once you create a project and specify its settings, you can create new project files and edit existing files, using one of the Quartus II editors — the Text Editor, the Block Editor, the Waveform Editor, the Memory Editor, or the Floorplan Editor.

When you are ready to test a design, you can compile or simulate it. When you compile or simulate a design, the Status window displays the percent progress made and the time spent at each stage of compilation or simulation and the Messages window displays any error or informational messages. The Compiler or Simulator also generates a report to summarize information about the project. The Compiler or Simulator report appears in the Report window. The Compiler or Simulator also generates an HTML or Text-Format version of the report. The Compiler extracts the entities you enter or that it finds during compilation or simulation; these entities appear in the Project Navigator, beneath the corresponding focus entity.
