Text Editor

Read This Before Using an External Text Editor

Before using an external text editor, you must close all text files that you have open in the Quartus® II Text Editor. Otherwise, the external text editor you select will not open.

In addition, you cannot use an external text editor to open either the Equations section (Compilation Report) or the Pin-Out File section (Compilation Report).

(UNIX and Linux workstations only) If you are using the external text editor feature with a text editor that does not open in its own window, you must use the xterm command. If you do not use the xterm command, the Quartus II software or the UNIX command window may stop responding. To add the command, type the following information in the Other text editor path name box: <path>\xterm -e <path>\<editor>. You can ignore the message Can't find executable file.
