Finding & Replacing Text with the Text Editor



To find text in the Text Editor:

  1. If you have not already done so, open a text file.

  2. Place the insertion point where you want the search to begin.  More Details

    Select the text in which you want the search to begin.

  3. Choose Find (Edit menu). Shortcut If you selected text, the text appears in the Find what box of the Find dialog box.

  4. If necessary, type the search text in the Find what box, including optional wildcard and/or special characters.

  5. If necessary, turn on one or more of the following:

  6. In the Search list, select a search direction.

  7. Click Find Next.

  8. If necessary, click Find Next again to find the next instance of the search text.

  9. To close the Find dialog box and save any search information you entered, click Cancel.

  10. To find the next instance of search text after you close the Find dialog box, choose Find Next (Edit menu). Shortcut

 

To replace text in the Text Editor:

  1. If you have not already done so, open a text file.

  2. Place the insertion point where you want the search to begin.  More Details

    or

    Select the text in which you want the search to begin.

  3. Choose Replace (Edit menu).  Shortcut If you selected text, the text appears in the Find what box of the Replace dialog box.

  4. If necessary, type the search text in the Find what box, including optional wildcard and/or special characters.

  5. In the Replace with box, type the text with which you want to replace the text in the Find what box, including optional wildcard and/or special characters.

  6. If necessary, turn on one or more of the following:

  7. In the Search list, select a search direction.

  8. To replace all instances of the search text with the text in the Replace with box, click Replace All.

  9. To replace only some instances of the search text:

    1. To start the search, click Find Next or Replace.

    2. To replace the selected instance of the search text, click Replace.

    3. To leave the selected text unchanged and find the next instance of the search text, click Find Next.

    4. Repeat steps b and c for each instance of the search text.

  10. To close the Find dialog box and save any search information you entered, click Cancel.

  11. To find the next instance of search text after you close the Find dialog box, choose Find Next (Edit menu). Shortcut
