If you change a Block Symbol File (.bsf) using the Create/Update > Create Symbol Files for Current File command (File menu) or by editing the file in the Symbol Editor, you must use the Update Symbol or Block command (Edit menu) to update instances of that symbol and the parameters and I/Os of the blocks. Updating symbols ensures that the file will compile properly.

You do not need to update the symbol or block, however, if you change the port or parameter properties for an individual block, megafunction, or macrofunction symbol instance in your Block Editor file.
