When specifying devices for device migration, use the following guidelines:
For best results, Altera® recommends that you specify the largest device you want to use for the design as the design's target device using the Device page in the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu). You can then gradually specify smaller devices as migration devices and compile the design until you determine which device is the best for the design.
If you want to transfer a project from a SameFrame device to a larger SameFrame device, Altera recommends that you make VCC
and GND
assignments based on the layout of the largest device that you are considering for device migration. Refer to individual device data sheets for more information.
If you want to transfer a project from a SameFrame device to a smaller SameFrame device, leave the outer I/O pins on the package unconnected, because the pins are not available in the smaller device.
Devices with higher logic cell counts (EPF10K130E devices and higher) require more input pins than devices with lower logic cell counts (EPF10K100E devices and lower). Therefore, if you want to transfer your project from a 240-pin QFP package in the FLEX 10KE device family to another 240-pin QFP package in the device family, Altera recommends that in devices with higher logic cell counts you use I/O pins that are potential input pins as GND
pins.
