Preferred Text Editor



Specifies the external text editor you want to use to create and open text files, and allows you to use the editor to locate the source of a message for text files, as described in the following table:

Quartus® II Text Editor When selected, allows you to use the Quartus II Text Editor to create and open text files or locate the source of messages in text files.
Other text editor path name When selected, specifies the directory path and name of the text editor application you want to use to create and open text files. You can either type the directory path and name of the editor in the Other text editor path name box or select the text editor application with Browse (...).

(UNIX and Linux workstations only) If you are using the external text editor feature with a text editor that does not open in its own window, you must use the xterm command. If you do not use the xterm command, the Quartus II software or the UNIX command window may stop responding. To add the command, type the following information in the Other text editor path name box: <path>\xterm -e <path>\<editor>. If you receive the message Can't find executable file, you can ignore it.

Use this editor to locate messages in text files When turned on, allows you to use the text editor you selected to locate the source of a messages in text files.
Command-line options

Specifies the file name and the line number of command-line commands that apply to the external text editor application you want to use.  Example

You must type these command-line commands if you want to locate the source of a message at the specific line number of the text file. If you do not, the external editor will merely open the text file in which the source of the message is located.
