Overview: Using the MegaWizard Portal Extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager

The MegaWizard® Portal extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager allows you to directly install and use the MegaCores available at the IP MegaStore site without leaving the Quartus® II environment. You can select an available MegaCore® in the list, obtain information about the selected MegaCore, register with the Altera® IP MegaStore site, download the MegaCore, install it on your computer, and launch the corresponding MegaWizard plug-in (if provided) all from within the Quartus II environment. This feature provides access to the most up-to-date versions of the MegaCores at the IP MegaStore.

The MegaWizard Portal extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager is similar to the list of plug-ins installed on your computer; however, the MegaCores in the IP Megastore folder are located on dedicated Altera servers and, to use any of these MegaCores, you must first download and install them. The MegaWizard Plug-In Manager downloads the installation packages after you register with the IP MegaStore site, and launches the installer program that guides you through the specifics of the installation process. Once installation is complete, the newly installed plug-in, if available, is added to the list of installed plug-ins.

The installation process—which includes communicating with the IP MegaStore site servers, downloading files over the Internet, and launching programs and an Internet browser— may require you to set certain specific parameters. The default settings for these parameters should work for most systems; however, you may need to modify the parameters depending on your operating system, read and write permissions set for certain directories, and your Internet connection.

Accessing the MegaWizard Portal Extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager

To access the MegaWizard Portal extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager, choose MegaWizard Plug-In Manager (Tools menu). Select Create a new custom megafunction variation and click Next. The IP MegaStore folder appears in the Available Megafunctions list and is the access point for all of the features of the MegaWizard Portal extension. To initiate Internet access to the IP MegaStore server, double-click the IP MegaStore folder or right-click the folder and choose Update (right-button pop-up menu). If a connection is successfully made, the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager receives information from the server regarding the available MegaCores at the IP MegaStore. The IP MegaStore folder then expands and displays the list of available MegaCores. Items listed in this folder represent the MegaCores (and associated MegaWizard plug-ins) at the IP MegaStore available for you to install.

NOTE The MegaWizard Plug-In Manager uses your local Internet connection and system settings. If opening the IP MegaStore folder does not display the list of available MegaCores, or a message reports an error, you may need to modify options in the Settings dialog box (Assignments menu). Refer to Creating Custom Settings for more details.

Obtaining Information and Installing MegaCores

Obtaining Information About a MegaCore

To obtain information about any of the available MegaCores at the IP MegaStore, right-click the MegaCore icon. If more information is available for the selected MegaCore, the right-button pop-up menu displays corresponding entries that direct you to the appropriate web site.

NOTE On the Windows operating system, the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager obtains information about the default browser installed on your computer and launches the default browser automatically. On UNIX and Linux systems, however, you may need to specify the browser path in the Settings dialog box. Refer to Creating Custom Settings for more details.
Installing a MegaCore

To install an available MegaCore from the IP MegaStore, double-click the MegaCore icon or right-click the icon and choose Install (right-button pop-up menu). You must register with the IP MegaStore site, by entering the required information into the registration form, before the installation process can continue. If registration is successful, the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager guides you through the installation process.

When installation successfully completes, the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager automatically adds the newly installed plug-in (if available) to the list of installed plug-ins. Select the installed plug-in and launch it to customize the MegaCore for your application.

Uninstalling a MegaCore

To uninstall an already installed plug-in (and its associated MegaCore), right-click the plug-in icon and choose Uninstall (right-button pop-up menu).

Creating Custom Settings

The MegaWizard Portal extension to the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager is designed to use certain default settings for operation. However, depending on the operating system, the method, and services used to connect to the Internet, some of these default settings may not be appropriate. In such cases, you need to specify custom settings in the Settings dialog box. Custom settings are persistent, that is, they are stored after you terminate a MegaWizard Plug-In Manager session and retrieved when you start a new session.

To access the Settings dialog box, right-click the IP MegaStore folder and choose Settings (right-button pop-up menu).

Directories tab

The options on this tab allow you to set the directory path for your Internet browser, the cache directory used to store files downloaded from the Internet, and the temporary (temp) directory used to store intermediate files.

If you are running the Windows operating system, in most cases you do not need to specify a browser because the Windows operating system provides the directory path to the default Internet browser installed on the system. If a legacy browser or browser product is installed on your computer that is not compliant with the requirements set by the operating system to allow for its automatic detection, you may need to specify the browser installed on your computer. For example, you may need to specify the directory path to older Netscape browsers.

On computers running a UNIX operating system, such as Solaris or HP systems, the browser detection mechanism may not exist, or the browser executable may not be in the system path. For these systems, Altera recommends that you specify the directory path leading to the browser executable.

The MegaWizard Plug-In Manager stores certain files downloaded from the Altera server in the cache directory to provide local information to you when you have no Internet connection or are working in "off-line" mode. The default cache directory, <drive>:\quartus\bin\MegaWizard_cache, works for most systems; however, in multi-user environments, or in system configurations in which the default cache directory is read-only, you can specify another cache directory.

The MegaWizard Plug-In Manager stores files downloaded from the Altera server in a temporary directory before transferring the complete downloaded file to its final destination in order to facilitate the cancellation or resuming of downloads. The default temporary directory is the directory pointed to by the TEMP or TMP environment variables; the TEMP environment variable, if defined and set to a valid directory (usually on UNIX systems), takes precedence over the TMP environment variable. These environment variables are usually set by system administrators or by the operating system itself, so the default temporary directory path works for most systems; however, in multi-user environments, or system configurations in which the default temporary directory is read-only, is too small, or is full, you can specify another temporary directory.

Connection tab

The options on this tab allow you to specify the connection scheme used by your system to connect to the Internet.

Turn on Use the default settings, to use the Windows operating system settings stored in the registry to access the Internet. This setting works for proxy-based systems if you already configured the proxy settings, and is the preferred setting for the Windows operating system. Altera recommends leaving the default setting unchanged unless you are using a UNIX operating system that needs special proxy handling or direct access to the Internet.

Turn on Use a proxy server to specify a proxy server and its related port number (usually set to the default HTTP port number 80). Altera recommends turning on this option if the default setting does not work properly, the system has a non-standard proxy setting, or if you must specify the proxy settings. When using this option you may need to bypass the proxy server to access some Internet sites. In this situation, click Advanced and specify the URLs to these sites in the Advanced Proxy Settings dialog box. This option is not available unless you turn off Use the default settings.

Turn off both Use the default settings and Use a proxy server to access a direct connection to the Internet (no proxy server in between) if your system supports such a connection.

Miscellaneous tab

The options on this tab allow you to turn on or turn off some of the features of the MegaWizard Plug-In Manager.

By default, whenever you download a file via the Internet, a progress bar continuously displays the number of bytes downloaded and, if available, the total number of bytes to be downloaded. You can turn off this feature by turning off Show file download progress dialog.

During installation of a MegaCore, an installation file is stored in the temporary directory and is deleted after the installation completes. You can save the installation file to a separate directory by turning on Save downloaded installation files and specifying a directory in which to save the files.
