You can create a symbol for a current file in the Block Editor or you can create or edit symbols in the Symbol Editor. When you create a symbol in the Block Editor, it is automatically saved as a Block Symbol File (.bsf) in the same directory as the current Block Design File (.bdf). If a symbol with the same name already exists for the current GDF or BDF, the Quartus® II software will prompt you with an option to overwrite the existing symbol.
If you create or edit a symbol in the Symbol Editor, you should save it as a BSF with the same name as the design entity you want it to represent. Once you create or edit a symbol in the Symbol Editor, you can add or update the symbol in the current GDF or BDF file.
