Lab #1: Familiarization with Autologic II
Assignment
Copies of Synthesizing with Autologic II, Chap. 2-3 are available on-line using the BoldBrowser in
the VLSI design laboratory. The assignment is to perform the six exercises in Chapter 3.
Remote use of the laboratory
For those of you with PPP accounts at ASU, you can run AL from home at
your PC. Just get a hold of an X-windows emulator for the PC (like "eXceed"),
telnet to vlsigw, set the DISPLAY and run "alui".
You can download eXceed from here at ASU.
It will ask for your userid which is nothing but your userid for
general.asu.edu. By selecting on the Product field you specify
the desired platform.
Download Exceed
Additonal note: You should also be able to run the BoldBrowser with
eXceed, but in general will not be able to run most Mentor tools (e.g.
Design Architect) without the downloaded Mentor fonts.
Report Requirements
- Exercises 0, 1. Nothing required
- Exercise 2. Discuss the differences produced by the area
reports in steps 6 and 11.
- Exercise 3. Discuss how Autologic is using the constraints
specified in steps 4-5. What is the critical path through the
design?
- Exercise 4. Submit the timing report in step 4, the testbench
listing, and an analysis of the results of your simulation at
step 6.
- Exercises 5-6. Discuss how the synthesiszed circuits are
affected by changing the constraints.
