Typographic Conventions



Quartus® II Help and manuals use the following typographic conventions:

Visual Cue: Meaning:
Bold Initial Capitals

Command names in menus, dialog box titles, tab names, and icon names are shown in bold with initial capital letters.

Examples: Find command, Headers & Footers dialog box, Design Files tab, Timing Analysis icon.

bold

Directory names, project names, drive names, file names, file name extensions, dialog box options, prompts in dialog boxes, and e-mail addresses are shown in bold.

Examples: \qdesigns directory, d: drive, filtref.bdf, File already exists. OK to overwrite?, http://www.altera.com.

Initial Capitals

Keyboard keys, menu names, programs, and applications are shown with initial capital letters.

Examples: Delete key, File menu, the Quartus II software.

"Initial Capitals in Quotation Marks"

Chapter and section titles in manuals and Quartus II Help topic titles are shown with initial capital letters and are enclosed in quotation marks.

Examples: "Licensing the Quartus II Software" in Quartus II Installation and Licensing for PCs, "Creating a New Custom Filter."

Italic Initial Capitals

Book and manual titles are shown in italic with initial capital letters.

Examples: Quartus II Installation & Licensing for PCs, Quartus II Installation & Licensing for UNIX and Linux Workstations.

Variables are shown in italic, enclosed by italicized angle brackets (<>).

Examples: <number>, <hierarchy path>, <test bench>.

Courier Font

Block names, code samples (including HTML), command-line commands, language and operating system keywords, node names, operators, parameters, parameter values, pin names, port names, signal names, and user input are shown in Courier font.

Examples: BEGIN, genmen, COMPONENT, newt, clk input pin, clk, next, newmaxw.

1., 2., 3., and a., b., c.,... Numbered steps are used in a list of items when the sequence of the items is important, such as the steps listed in a procedure.
Bullet Bullets are used in a list of items when the sequence of the items is not important.
Checkmark The checkmark indicates a procedure that consists of one step only.
Note The hand points to information that requires special attention.
Pointer The upward-pointing hand indicates that you can click the left mouse button on any portion of the illustration that follows it to get help on that item. The mouse pointer changes to an upward-pointing hand when it is over a picture or word for which help is available.
Feet In Quartus II manuals, the feet show you where to go for more information on a particular topic.
Special symbols

Special symbols are used for these three items:

Rising Edge Low-to-high transition
Falling Edge High-to-low transition
